ST. THOMAS — The motoring public is advised that WAPA and APR Energy will be transporting a generating unit from the Crown Bay area to the Randolph Harley Power Plant, above, on Friday. Due to the size of the unit, the Subbase road leading to the power plant will be closed beginning at 5 a.m. Vehicular traffic will also be restricted from the airport access road to the power plant. Only WAPA or contractor personnel will be allowed to traverse from the airport access road to the western entrance of the power plant during the operation.
The unit will be transported from near the Crown Bay cruise ship dock entrance along the roadway east of the Doris Hodge tennis courts. The transport will continue in a northerly direction, passing in front of the Property and Procurement building, the school lunch warehouse, the PUMA oil terminal, en route to the power plant. The movement of Unit 27 is expected to be completed by 8 a.m.
In anticipation of the movement, parking will not be allowed along the roadway that sits between the offices of Antilles Gas Corporation and the eastern entrance to the power plant until the operation is complete.
Once installed and commissioned, the 26-megawatt generator will be used to augment generation capacity at the Harley Plant while new, more efficient and more reliable units are commissioned. Unit 27 is capable of burning either oil or LPG in the generation of electricity.
