ST. THOMAS — Sixth-grader Gequan Aubain was named Spelling Bee champion of the Yvonne Millner-Bowsky Elementary School on Wednesday, the Department of Education announced Friday.
After ten rounds and eight students competing for the chance to advance to the District Spelling Bee, Gequan correctly spelled the championship round word, “disguise.”
Bowsky Assistant Principal Sandra Reed opened the event by welcoming parents, students and supporters to the annual event. She also made special mention of the extra time and effort the students devoted to preparing for the Bee, even on an abbreviated school schedule.
Following the singing of the Virgin Islands March and the school’s PBIS song, the rules were read and the spelling competition was underway. The students, a mix of fifth and sixth graders demonstrated their vast vocabulary and excellent literacy skills.
Following ten shorts rounds, Gequan Aubain was crowed champion and sisters, Robyn Eddy and Krystal Eddy took home the first and second place spots.
All of the participants received trophies for their hard work and preparation.
The St. Thomas – St. John District Intermediate Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2018.
