Eurdora Kean ScubaRays Capture 2018 STT-STJ District Seaperch Win

Education / News / Virgin Islands / March 18, 2018

ST. THOMAS — The Ivanna Eudora Kean High School (IEKHS) ScubaRays won first place in the St. Thomas–St. John District’s 3rd annual SeaPerch Robotics Competition held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Olga’s Fancy pool in Frenchtown, the Department of Education announced Saturday.

Seniors Claudius Abraham Jr. and Joel Williams, who make up the ScubaRays, will travel to North Dartmouth, Massachusetts with their Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and compete in the International SeaPerch Challenge on June 1-3, 2018 at the MacLean Campus Center of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Only two teams participated in this year’s competition leaving the Charlotte Amalie High School Hawks with the second. Students built underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and completed an underwater obstacle course and challenge to test the speed and agility of the robot. The winning ScubaRays will again undertake the same challenge on a much larger scale for the international competition.

The competition is sponsored by the Virgin Islands Department of Education, Office of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) in partnership with the U.S. Department of the Navy, Office of Naval Research, Science and Technology.

The SeaPerch Program provides students with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science, and math through the construction of an underwater ROV as part of a science, engineering technology curriculum. Throughout the project, students will learn engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork, and technical applications.
