Shooting At Strip Club Leaves One Dead, Another Critically Wounded

Crime / Virgin Islands / June 29, 2018

ST. CROIX — A shooting incident that occurred inside as well as outside the Playaz Club during the wee hours of Friday morning, left one man dead and another man critically wounded, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced Friday evening.

According to Mr. Dratte, V.I.P.D. officers were dispatched to Playaz Club — where striptease performances and other adult activities take place — located at the Diamond Crest Plaza across from Sunny Isle, at 2:37 a.m. Friday. Upon their arrival to the scene, officers discovered a male victim in the driver’s seat of a vehicle, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body, according to Mr. Dratte.

Emergency medical technicians on the scene examined the victim but were unable to register any vital signs of life.

The victim was identified by next of kin as 52-year-old Lloyd Canegata.

Another male victim, who was shot multiple times in his upper body inside the strip club, was transported by private vehicle to the Juan F. Luis Hospital for medical attention, where he was being treated as of Friday, according to Mr. Dratte.

Police say the incident is under active investigation. The V.I.P.D. is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-778-2211, or Crime Stoppers USVI with an anonymous tip here.
