ST. THOMAS — The Legislature of the Virgin Islands will host a hurricane observance service at the Earl B. Ottley Legislature on Wednesday, one day before the September 6 anniversary of Hurricane Irma’s landfall on St. Thomas and St. John. Hurricane Maria struck St. Croix on September 19.
“Giving thanksgiving and praise for our continued resilience,” reads a flyer of the event furnished by Senate President Myron Jackson.
Guests include Marilyn Braithwaite-Hall, the wife of UVI President David Hall, singer Lorna L. Freeman, Dr. Gerald & Sharon McDonald of Impacting Your World Christian Ministries, and Pastor Judy Hodge, who is expected to pray for the territory’s protection against storms, among other guests.
“The devastation and the loss of life has been traumatic. However, we give God thanks for his protection and blessings in seeing us through these difficult times,” Mr. Jackson said. “If we all work together for the better good, we will accomplish much. Let us be united in pride and hope.”
Senators will also speak at the event, according to Mr. Jackson’s office. It will begin at 8:30 a.m. The Legislature is expected to livestream the service as well.
An anniversary story from The Consortium, featuring videos and comments, will be a featured piece on the website Wednesday morning.
