The Waste Management Authority said on Sunday that it was working to extinguish a fire located at the Anguilla Landfill entrance this morning. The authority said the fire ignited at 3:00 a.m. Sunday, and that Virgin Islands Fire Service staff along with WMA contractors were working expeditiously to contain the blaze.
The authority recommended that residents with respiratory disorders/conditions shelter in place to minimize exposure to smoke as wind directions change. Waste Management said it will continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health and the environment. The authority also committed to providing updates on any changes that may affect the public and haulers from utilizing the solid waste facility. And it apologized for any inconvenience the fire may have caused.
