Man Dies From Apparent Self-Inflicted Wound

News / Virgin Islands / October 22, 2018

ST. CROIX — Police officers were dispatched early Sunday morning to Mon Bijou, where a man was found sitting on a chair lifeless after apparently exacting a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced.

According to Mr. Dratte, upon officers’ arrival to the scene, contact was made with the victim’s common law wife. The woman told police that as she got out of bed and walked into the living room in the morning time, she discovered her husband unresponsive, bleeding from his head with a gun on his lap.

Officers observed an adult Hispanic male sitting on a chair in the living room with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to head, Mr. Dratte said.

Mr. Dratte said that a check of the surrounding area was made in search of witnesses, suspects and evidence. However, none was found.

The victim was identified as 74-year-old Efrain Rivera.

This incident is under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Bureau, Mr. Dratte said.
