Man Miraculously Survives Freak Accident At Gallows Bay Stoplight

News / Virgin Islands / October 30, 2018

ST. CROIX — A freak accident on Tuesday morning at the Bypass traffic lights in Gallows Bay ended with one truck being totaled and another badly damaged, after being struck by a flatbed carrying a backhoe.

On the scene, the totaled truck was stationed crippled near the traffic lights pole, mangled in so many ways that bystanders wondered how the man driving the truck survived. The flatbed with the backhoe was parked in an area northeast of the lights following the accident.

The man who was driving the totaled truck, a Chevrolet Silverado, appeared to be still in shock at the time as he surveyed the damage. However, he was walking and communicating normally. Bystanders spoke amongst themselves, marveling that the man had survived the accident. Some advised him to seek medical attention. “I’m just assessing everything,” he said, sitting in what was left of the passenger’s side of the vehicle.

The victim explained that while he was driving heading east with traffic lights in his favor, the flatbed, which was coming from the Bypass and heading down to the Gallows Bay Port area, lost control and slammed into the truck, disfiguring the Silverado while damaging a smaller Chevy truck.

It was not clear whether the driver controlling the flatbed lost control or mistakenly went through the traffic signal while it was red.

The accident occurred just before or after the 7:00 a.m. hour. A detective later appeared on the scene and was communicating with the victim. No one died during the incident.
