The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today awarded $28,184 to support one new homeless program in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Today’s award is additional support upon $164,698 H.U.D. granted to renew funding to three local homeless assistance programs throughout the territory. Combined, the funding represents a record investment to support state and local efforts across the nation to reduce and end homelessness, H.U.D. said.

HUD Secretary Ben Carson made the announcement in Akron, Ohio today during a visit to the Battered Women’s Shelter, a H.U.D.-assisted local program that houses domestic violence victims who are at risk of homelessness.
The release said H.U.D. continues to challenge state and local planning organizations called “Continuums of Care” to support their highest performing local programs that have proven most effective in meeting the needs of persons experiencing homelessness in their communities. Many of these state and local planners also embraced H.U.D.’s call to shift funds from existing underperforming projects to create new ones that are based on best practices that will further their efforts to prevent and end homelessness.
