Letter To The Editor | Legislature Is Failing To Educate VI Electorate On Upcoming Reapportionment Special Election

Opinion / Virgin Islands / February 28, 2019

Dear Editor,

The St. Croix Government Retirees continue to do what they may to “educate” the people on the proposed Initiative. The 32nd Legislature voted for a Special Election on March 30th because they unanimously agreed that the people needed education. Members of the 33rd Legislature have not assisted the people to be educated on the Initiative. Members of the 33rd Legislature are not encouraging people to go to vote March 30th.

Members of the 33rd Legislature commented and commended people of the BVI on their election, but absolutely nothing has been said about the Territory’s upcoming Special Election.

There is an opportunity for the members of the 33rd Legislature to help with the education of the people on the Reapportionment Initiative proposal. The Office of the Governor helped to secure a facility in each district for education sessions to be held. Saturday, March 2nd, SCGR will hold a public education forum in the St. Croix Education Complex Auditorium from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, March 10th, SCGR will hold a public education forum in Ivanna Kean cafeteria from 3-6 p.m.

The members of the 33rd Legislature should attend one of those public education forums and participate by asking questions of Supervisor Caroline Fawkes and/or Mario Moorhead. The listening and viewing public would definitely learn from their interaction. This is an invitation to the members of the 33rd Legislature and any academia political science experts with questions to attend the forum. In St. Croix the moderator is Gerard Emanuel; the moderator in STT is not confirmed.

Submitted on Tuesday by Mary L. Moorhead.
