Virgin Islands Police Department Acting Commissioner, Jason Marsh, on Wednesday announced a creative initiative aimed at encouraging residents who have yet to register their vehicles or those driving without a license, to come into compliance with the territory’s driving laws.
The initiative, called “Do the Right Thing”, sees residents who are stopped at checkpoints and are found to be in compliance with driving laws, receiving free tickets to events during the upcoming Virgin Islands Carnival (St. Thomas Carnival) season, along with free lunch and dinner giveaways at some of St. Croix’s and St. Thomas’ best restaurants, the V.I.P.D. said.
The Do the Right Thing initiative includes a ramping up of random checkpoints around the islands, and residents found in compliance will be given their rewards on the spot, according to the release.
The initiative also has the potential of improving relations between law enforcement officers and residents, something Governor Albert Bryan recently said he wanted to foster.
The V.I.P.D. encouraged residents to call the Bureau of Motor Vehicles with questions relative to licensing and registration. The St. Thomas number is 340-774-4268; on St. Croix it’s 340-773-4268; and on St. John it’s 340-776-6262.
