‘Pass Out Challenge’ Overtaking VI Youth, Police Holding Town Hall To Warn Parents

Breaking News / News / Virgin Islands / August 7, 2014

There’s a dangerous new trend that teenagers around the U.S. and now the U.S. Virgin Islands are participating in that’s lead to over 400 deaths, and in an effort to raise awareness, the Virgin Islands Police Department are hosting a town hall meeting today warning parents of the dangers of the deadly activity.

Called  the ‘Pass Out Challenge’, or ‘Sleep Challenge’, it involves a person bending over and breathing heavily until they hyperventilate and then quickly stand up. Another person instantly starts exerting pressure on their chest until they pass out. The risky activity has been reported on St. Croix, where one female had to be rushed to the hospital because she was having seizures after performing the Pass Out Challenge.

Other challenges will also be discussed at the town hall today, which takes place at the Patrick Sweeney Pavillion at 5:30pm. Two other challenges include fire and choking. The Fire Challenge includes soaking oneself with a flammable liquid (alcohol and acetone are mostly used), then lighting the flammable liquid and immediately hustling to put the fire off, most times through a shower.

The Choking Challenge is self strangulation. Items such as belts, dog leashes, scarves and ropes are just some examples used to perform this dangerous challenge. Apparently the end goal is to achieve a ‘high’.

Below is a video showing how the perilous activity is performed.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
