ST. THOMAS — The VI Carnival Committee during a meeting over the weekend decided that it would not reverse the parade route for the 2019 Children’s and Adults parades in St. Thomas.
Last week, VI Carnival Committee Excutive Director Halvor Hart III told The Consortium that while there were discussions about reversing the parade route — which would have seen troupes starting from the opposite end as compared to the current start point at the Western Cemetery — a decision on whether to reverse the route was pending further discussions with stakeholders, among them troupe owners. Today, Lorna Nichols, a member of the committee’s public relations team, told The Consortium that the committee decided to leave the route as is.
Mr. Hart had told The Consortium that the idea behind the route reverse consideration was the possible easing of traffic. Asked whether it shouldn’t be an expectation that traffic will be heavy on the day of the territory’s biggest showcase of culture, Mr. Hart concurred, but said the committee simply wanted to improve the process.
For the parades this year, troupes will still start at the Western Cemetery, parading all the way to Post Office Square in Charlotte Amalie, where they perform for cameras and dignitaries, before moving to Lionel Roberts Stadium, as has been customary over the years.
