Crime Stoppers USVI said it’s in the process of installing 235 signs across the territory in an effort to bring awareness to the anonymous tip line and the services that it offers — among them cash rewards to individuals who provide information leading to the arrest of criminals. Crime Stoppers said it had to secure funding and get approval from the Department of Public Works before moving forward with the planned installations.
The signs have already been erected on St. Croix, and will be installed in St. Thomas and St. John in the coming weeks, Crime Stoppers said.
According to a release issued Monday, Crime Stoppers said the students were participating in Good Hope Country Day’s 42nd Mini-Gusto program that provides out-of-classroom opportunities for students to immerse themselves in activities, internships and community service. It said twelve students elected to work with their teacher and Chair of Crime Stoppers USVI, Laurie Dunton, along with CSUSVI Law Enforcement Liaison Daniel Rodriguez, to complete the installations. Crime Stoppers said the students were instrumental in identifying the locations of each sign and used GPS to map their location for future reference by the Department of Public Works.
The signs provide residents with Crime Stoppers’ anonymous hotline number 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and remind the community that cash rewards are paid for information leading to the arrest of an individual, seizure of drugs or weapons and recovery of stolen property.
