High Quality Mulch Now Available On St. Thomas And St. Croix, Nelson Says

Community Center / News / Virgin Islands / March 20, 2019

Department of Agriculture Commissioner Nominee Positive Nelson announced during a Tuesday press conference that high quality mulch, which Mr. Nelson referred to as “high grade”, is now available for pickup in St. Thomas and St. Croix. The mulch will be provided to farmers first, he said, and then the general community.

On St. Croix, small loads of mulch, including buckets and small pickup trucks, can be collected at the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex in Estate Lower Love. For larger loads, famers were directed to Estate Slob on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. “Coordinate with us, we will load if for you,” Mr. Nelson said.

On St. Thomas the mulch is available at Bordeaux Farm and at Estate Dorothea on the Agricultural Grounds, Mr. Nelson said. He said farmers had requested that D.O.A. spread the mulch across the island for accessibility, however he said the department could only do so much with its limited resources, and he urged farmers to collect the mulch at the current locations.

Mr. Nelson also discouraged farmers of collecting mulch to resell it, calling it “illegal and totally unethical.”

Also available a the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex on St. Croix are telephone poles, Mr. Nelson said, which can be utilized in a variety in ways in farming.
