Senator Donna Frett-Gregory used a strange word to describe herself during a Finance Committee hearing on Tuesday, when senators were reviewing a bill sponsored by Senator Myron Jackson that aims to create what is called The Virgin Islands Public Art Program. Bill No. 33-0004 requires that 1 percent of total capital improvement costs be expended for Virgin Islands works of art.
While discussing the measure, Senator Kurt Vialet spoke of his love for the territory, and encouraged Virgin Islanders to be proud of their home. He mentioned other nationalities living in the territory who celebrate their heritage with parades — including the Dominican Republic community — and said that it was right for them to do so.
“Every Caribbean island clearly tells you where they come from, and I encourage every Virgin Islander to not allow anybody who is not from the Virgin Islands to disrespect this land, where they derive their money, their profit, their home, their lifestyle, and then try to speak bad about the Virgin Islands that’s feeding them. That gets me very upset,” Mr. Vialet said.
It was following Mr. Vialet’s talk that Mrs. Frett-Gregory made the strange comment. After describing herself as a proud Virgin Islander, she then said this: “I’m a conundrum of the Virgin Islands. I like to remind people of that. Sometimes I have to remind my good friend of that.”
What’s a conundrum? It’s described as “a confusing and difficult problem or question.” Webster’s description has it as “an intricate and difficult problem.”
