ST. CROIX — The Elmo Plaskett Little League opened its 2019 baseball season with a parade that started at Fort Christiansvaern and continued all the way to the Canegata Ballpark, where the league’s season-opening games were held.
Teams and their leaders, along with parents and guardians and other supporters, paraded with pride as they made their way to the ballpark, where a respectable crowd had gathered to watch the games.
On location was Governor Albert Bryan among other local leaders, who attended multiple events on Saturday, including the Special Olympics at the Renaissance Park (VIALCO) on St. Croix.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Little League International Program, and Elmo Plaskett League organizers said while 2019 marks the Elmo Plaskett League’s 50th anniversary, the Little League International anniversary is being celebrated on a local level as well.
“We aspire to provide the next generation of youngsters with the opportunity to benefit the Little League experience,” the league said in a recently issued release.
There will be a selfsame event in Frederiksted today, beginning with a parade at the Freedom City Service Station that will end at the Renholdt Jackson Sports Complex in Whim, where games will be played. Today’s parade will commence at 1:00 p.m.
