Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. today for the Reapportionment Initiative’s special election, whose intent is to upend the current way Virgin Islanders elect their leaders, for a more representative form of government through districts that govern certain parts of the islands. The idea is to hold leaders more accountable once elected. Polls close at 7:00 p.m. today.
The initiative, if approved, would restructure the legislature from two separate legislative districts into five, with the legislature continuing with 15 senators: 9 district senators and 6 at-large senators.
The initiative also needs half of the territory’s registered voters to participate in today’s vote, and a majority of those votes, to become law.
