U.S. Virgin Islands athletes at CARIFTA games are bringing home medals for the territory, including top placements in the junior swimming championship competitions.
According to the St. Thomas Swimming Association’s Facebook page, Max Wilson, a 14-year-old native of St.Thomas, won a number of gold medals in his category at the competition, including the 400-meter individual medley and the 100-meter backstroke on Sunday. Then on Monday, Max won gold in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter freestyle, according to results posted by the St. Thomas Swimming Association. All the competitions won by Max were in the boys 13-14 category.
Max’s haul on Monday brought the number of gold medals the U.S. Virgin Islands captured at the competition this year to six: four gold and two silver medals, with Natalia Kuipers placing second on Monday in the girls 15-17 200-meter butterfly. The competition, which was held in Barbados this year, concluded Tuesday.
The CARIFTA Aquatics Championships is an annual, age-group aquatics championships for the Caribbean. It has been held since 1985, and is similar in form/origin to the track & field/athletics event: the CARIFTA Games. The event is held under the auspices of CANOC, the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees.
