Max Wilson’s gold medal haul of three was not complete on Monday. The St. Thomas native had another chance to take home another gold medal on Tuesday, which was the final day of the 2019 Junior CARIFTA Swimming Competition being held on Barbados this year.
He did just that.
Max won gold in the 200-meter backstroke and a bronze in the 400 freestyle Tuesday night. Both wins were in the boys 13-14 category. The gold medal brought his first-place medal total at the competition to four, an impressive feat for the U.S. Virgin Islands swimmer.
Also winning last night was Jaidan Camacho, who won a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke.
In total, the U.S. Virgin Islands won 7 gold medals at the CARIFTA Swimming Competition this year, along with three silver medals. Natalia Kuipers placed second on Monday in the girls 15-17 200-meter butterfly.
The CARIFTA Aquatics Championships is an annual, age-group aquatics championships for the Caribbean. It has been held since 1985, and is similar in form/origin to the track & field/athletics event: the CARIFTA Games. The event is held under the auspices of CANOC, the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees.
