Roach Out Of Territory For United Nations Caribbean Regional Seminar In Grenada

News / Virgin Islands / May 1, 2019

Lieutenant Governor Tregenza Roach left the territory on Wednesday to attend the United Nations Caribbean Regional Seminar, called “Implementation of the Third International Decade for the Eradication of Pragmatic Measures”.

The seminar, being held in Grenada, is hosted by the Grenadian government in pursuant to U.N. General Assembly resolution 65/119 of December 10, 2010, which declared 2011-2020 the third International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism.

Mr. Roach will be joined by representatives from non-self-governing territories, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, representatives from member states and experts on the topic, according to Mr. Roach’s office. Discussions will focus on concrete steps and actions that can be taken to advance and complete the process of decolonization.

Due to the dates of the seminar: May 2 – 4, Mr. Roach will be out of the territory for the remaining carnival activities. “Anyone who knows me, knows that Carnival is one of my favorite times of the year. I look forward to all the activities, especially seeing our young people at their cultural best during the Children’s Parade and coming up the road myself with my troupe, Elskoe and Associates, an entry that has been in almost every one of our carnivals,” Mr. Roach said. “But this year, duty calls. The issue of status continues to be a critical issue for Virgin Islanders, and so I could not miss the opportunity to take our concerns and issues to the world stage, using the essential forum that the United Nations offers.”

The lieutenant governor will return to the territory on May 5. During his absence, Senate President Kenneth Gittens will assume the duties of the lieutenant governor, as per the Revised Organic Act of the Virgin Islands.
