St. Croix Track Club Wins Gold, Silver Medals In Puerto Rico

News / Sports / Virgin Islands / May 7, 2019

The St. Croix Track Club Mustangs won silver and gold medals in Puerto Rico over the weekend, showing continued prowess in the track and field sport. The team also won gold medals in Puerto Rico in February, which qualified them for the CARIFTA games in Cayman Islands this year.

Team members Akyra Joseph and Michelle Smith competed in the AAJI (ASOCIACIÓN DE ATLETISMO JUVENIL E INFANTIL) league finals on Saturday in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. While Joseph was 7th overall in the Long Jump with a distance of 4.10m, Michelle won silver in the 1000m in a time of 3 minutes and 14.04 seconds, and gold in the 60m hurdles in a record time of 9.81 seconds. Smith’s 60m hurdles time is an AAJI and Virgin Islands National youth record, according to the St. Croix Track Club. The previous record was 10.09 seconds, which was set in 2016.

“Congratulations to these wonderful athletes,” said the St. Croix Track Club in a release. “We are very proud of all our athletes as they continue to work hard in their classes and in Track & Field. We are also very thankful for our supporters and sponsors.”
