Gas Spill At Lower Love Service Station Forces Reroute Of Traffic; No Injuries Reported

News / Virgin Islands / May 9, 2019

ST. CROIX — A gas spill Thursday morning at the Lower Love Service Station near the Agricultural Fair Grounds (Department of Agricultural), forced law enforcement officers to reroute traffic until VI Fire Service members could wash off the spilled gas.

According to the owner of the gas station, the gas spill occurred at about 10:45 a.m., and was caused by a customer who left a gas pump running unattended.

V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte said about 25 gallons of gas had spilled, creating a potentially catastrophic situation at the gas station. The owner said he immediately called the authorities, fearing any spark of fire could cause an explosion.

Upon a Consortium reporter’s arrival to the location at about 11:30 a.m., firemen could be scene hosing the gas off the concrete floor of the gas station, while police officers blocked both ends of the road, forcing traffic to either turn left on the road heading to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles for motorists heading west, or to the right where Annaly Farms is located. For drivers who were heading east, police rerouted traffic left heading into Estate Grove Place, or right to the Melvin Evans Highway.

No injuries were reported.
