ST. CROIX — The Department of Public Works said on Monday that it has activated four new traffic signals on the Melvin Evans Highway.
The announcement follows delays caused by a number of setbacks, according to then-Federal Highway Program Manager, Jomo McClean, who said in a March 2018 release that the backlog was due to several reasons. “Our previous supplier went out of business last year, so we were forced to find a new supplier on short notice,” he said. “It normally takes several months to receive traffic signals and poles from the date of order. That time frame has been doubled and, in some cases, tripled due to the storms. We’re not the only place ordering traffic infrastructure, so that’s exacerbated the wait even more.”
The Melvin Evans Highway lights were originally supposed to be operational in March 2018, however the Mapp administration announced a delay and said the traffic signals would be operational in July of the same year. They are, however, only now coming online.
The following lights were activated today by D.P.W.:
- Good Hope
- Carlton
- Williams Delight
- Paradise
The new signals are replacing the previous set which were damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, D.P.W. said. The signals were placed in flashing mode for the last three days as an indication to motorists that they would be operational shortly.
