Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit will visit the U.S. Virgin Islands June 4 to meet with Dominicans to provide progress on recovery and development projects in the commonwealth following Hurricane Maria’s devastation to the island, according to a release issued earlier this week.
The prime minister and leader of the Dominica Labour Party, who has served as the island’s chief executive since 2004, will appear at a town hall meet and greet at the Living Word Ministries Convention Center in Smith Bay, St. Thomas on June 4 at 6:30 p.m.
He will be on St. Croix the following day for a selfsame event at the Drive Inn in Estate Grove, at 6:30 p.m.
According to the release, while visiting the territory, Mr. Skerrit will make what was described as a courtesy call to Governor Albert Bryan and former Governor Kenneth Mapp.
Mr. Skerrit is currently in a heated battle with the United Workers Party of Dominica to retain his position as prime minister. The country’s general election, which takes place every five years, is expected to be announced by the prime minister sometime this year.
The Labor Party has dominated Dominican politics for the past 19 years, with Mr. Skerrit becoming prime minister in 2004 following the death fo Pierre Charles. He has led the party — and the nation — ever since, and has been campaigning feverishly to win the upcoming elections.
The Dominican diaspora in the territory are invited to attend the events.
