ST. CROIX — The Virgin Islands Police Department has charged a 79-year-old man with negligent homicide for the death of Brendel William, who succumbed to his injuries in a Puerto Rico hospital on May 23 after he was struck by a vehicle near Alfredo Andrews Elementary School on May 6. Brendel was 14.
According to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte, the 79-year-old man, named Laurely E. Henry, was arrested on Thursday in accordance with a warrant issued by a Superior Court Judge for negligent homicide by a vehicle.
Brendel had sustained a hole in one of his lungs following the accident. Initially thought to be recovering, he had to be put back on a machine for surgery, but he did not survive, according to police.
The incident
Mr. Dratte said that on Monday, May 6 at about 3:14 p.m., a male driver traveling in a black SUV on the Mon Bijou road made a left turn to traverse onto the Alfredo Andrews School road, struck another vehicle, veered left and struck a 14-year-old boy who was walking on the grassy area in front of the school headed home to a nearby housing community. The vehicle then proceeded onto the school grounds, Mr. Dratte said.
The boy, a student of the Woodson Junior High School, sustained internal injury and was airlifted to San Juan, Puerto Rico for treatment, where he was in critical condition receiving emergency care until his death on May 23.
Mr. Henry was able to post bail of $30,000, and was released pending his advisement hearing.
