ST. CROIX — With roadwork ongoing in various locations on St. Croix, VI Paving Inc., one of the companies contracted by the government for road repairs, has its equipment secured at various locations to prevent the constant transporting of heavy equipment — a strategy that also saves a lot of time.
But Sunday night at about 9:15, one of the company’s traxcavators, a $220,000 equipment that the company purchased this year, was vandalized in the yard where it was being secured.
VI Paving officials said they received a call about the fire from the individual whose yard the machine was being stored in at about 9:15 p.m. When they arrived to the location, the equipment was consumed by fire. With no other explanation for what occurred, they believe it was purposely destroyed.
VI Paving securely stores some equipment near worksites. It is a strategy the company has long used to save time, especially since roadwork is a very time-sensitive undertaking.
The traxcavator’s $220,000 price tag is just the base cost; when shipping and other expenses are factored in, the costs climbs significantly.
VI Paving is seeking the community’s assistance in helping local authorities bring the person or persons involved in the destruction of the equipment to justice.
