News / Virgin Islands / July 9, 2019

The Frederiksted Twin City Lions Club recently installed its new officers for the 2019- 2020 Lionistic Year and recognized students for outstanding academic achievement during the 24th Annual Installation, which was held on June 16, a recently issued release has made known. The incoming President, Danielle DeChabert MJF, looks forward to continuing the organization’s commitment to service and spearheading more community projects during her leadership, said the release.

At the installation, the Lions continued their tradition of recognizing two students from their adopted school, the Claude O. Markoe Elementary School, for their academicachievements. The “High Achievers Award” was created over 12 years ago to recognizethe accomplishments of the top students. This year, Class Valedictorian Jamira Joseph and Salutatorian Lalique Joseph, received monetary awards of $50 each along with individual trophies. Interestingly, the girls are identical twins and are very competitive.

In his final speech to the club membership, outgoing President, Rafael Llanos Jr., challenged the membership to continue to expand the club’s service mandate through the creation of meaningful partnerships. The Frederiksted Twin City Lions has ongoing partnerships with Frederiksted Health Care, Inc. to provide breakfasts for the Homeless and with the St. Croix Lions Club to promote Diabetes Awareness through the Annual Strides Walk. Through its Alpha Leo Club, a youth program for ages 12-18, the Lions also host the Annual College and Career Pathways Workshop. The Twin City Lions’community service activities include hosting an annual speech competition for junior high school students, cleaning local parks and conducting an annual food drive to benefitMy Brother’s Table.

The Frederiksted Twin City Lions also provide a $1,000 scholarship to a graduate of the St. Croix public schools who is planning to attend the University of the Virgin Islands. This year’s recipient, Esonica Charles, a graduate of St. Croix Educational Complex, will begin college in the fall to pursue her goal of becoming a radiologist, according to the release.
