The U.S. Virgin Islands and other Caribbean islands are in the possible path of a system that the National Hurricane Center is giving a 40 percent chance of formation in the coming days.
Currently a tropical wave, the system is located over the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean, a few hundred miles south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. It continues to produce a broad area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms, N.H.C. said.
While no significant development of this system is expected for the next few days as it moves westward at about 15 mph, upper-level winds are forecast to gradually become more conducive and a tropical depression could form over the weekend several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles, N.H.C. said.
The system’s project path puts the Lesser Antilles, which includes the USVI, in its way. However, while residents should pay attention to the wave’s trajectory and development, there are currently no forecasts beyond its possible development into a tropical depression by the weekend.
