Port Authority Set To Rebuild Network Of Video Cameras At Red Hook Marine Terminals On St. Thomas

News / Virgin Islands / August 7, 2019

ST. THOMAS — The watchful eye of Virgin Islands Port Authority (VIPA) security will soon be on you if you’re at or near the Red Hook ferry terminal.

The Port Authority Board of Governors Tuesday awarded a $91,500 contract to the Tech One Security Communications LLC to repair and replace an advanced video camera system at the Urman Victor Fredericks Marine Terminal. Monitored video cameras will give V.I.P.A. security the ability to surveil the entire property, to include the ferry terminal and newly opened parking garage adjacent to the terminal.

“The entire perimeter of the Port Authority property will be under surveillance,” said V.I.P.A. Executive Director Carlton Dowe told V.I.P.A. Board of Governors at Tuesday meeting on St. Thomas.

Urman Victor Fredericks Marine Terminal serves thousands of passengers traveling between St. Thomas and St. John, and St. Thomas and the British Virgin Islands. Inside the 9,500-foot terminal are waiting areas with open-air seating along the dock, inter-island ferry ticket counters, restroom, a bar and small restaurants, along with other small stores.

The V.I.P.A. wharfinger’s office is also located in the terminal. The recently opened two-story parking lot can be used for daily or overnight parking (for a fee).
