Senator Kurt Vialet said Monday that he has been diligently working with the Department of Education over the past few months to assess the department’s needs as it relates to maintenance projects of D.O.E.’s school and non-school support facilities.
The veteran lawmaker said he identified more than $5 million in funds that can be reprogrammed from proceeds of the Matching Fund Revenue Bonds, issued pursuant to Act No. 7081, Act No. 7453, and certain remaining unused funds allocated to the Department of Education pursuant to Act No. 7337.
According to the release, with the advice of the 33rd Legislature’s legal counsel, Mr. Vialet has performed due diligence to be certain that monies reprogrammed will be approved by the Public Finance Authority’s bond council.
“There is major work to be done across the territory to include the rehabilitation of school playgrounds, sports and music facilities, modular installation, roof, kitchen and bathroom repairs as well as electric and plumbing upgrades,” Mr. Vialet said. The senator’s bill request, numbered 19-0327, addresses major needs of public schools in each district which he said is right on time for the 2019-2020 school year. The measure is expected to be introduced during a Senate session today.
The senator extended best wishes to all students, faculty and staff throughout the territory for the upcoming school year. However, he said he is most enthusiastic about the individuals that have taken the steps to continue pursuing their goals whether it be adult education or higher education.
