Department of Public Works Distributing Sandbags on St. Croix

News / Virgin Islands / August 27, 2019

The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works is distributing sandbags in the St. Croix District from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. today. There will be no distribution of sandbags in the St. Thomas-St. John district. (The release notifying the public of the sandbag distribution was issued at 1:36 p.m. An updated release was issued at 2:20 p.m.)

The action comes as Tropical Storm Dorian moves into the Caribbean sea tracking south of St. Croix. The National Hurricane Center said this morning the storm would bring between 2-4 inches of rain to the island, and up to 6 inches in isolated areas.

Distribution locations are:

  • Department of Public Works, Annas Hope
  • Grove Place Fire Station
  • Cotton Valley Fire Station

Residents are limited to up to 10 bags per household, the department said. This will allow all residents requiring sandbags to be serviced. Pre-filled sandbags are available for elderly and people with disabilities, access and functional needs.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prepare for the duration of the hurricane season, which ends on November 30.
