Airports Open, Seaports Closed, Port Authority Says; Air Travelers May Use ID, Ticket, Or Boarding Pass During Curfew

Community Center / News / Virgin Islands / August 28, 2019

The Virgin Islands Port Authority has issued the following travel advisory as Tropical Storm Dorian passes the United States Virgin Islands:

Airports:

The Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas and the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix are both open.

  • All commuter flights have been canceled, including Cape Air, Seaborne, Seaflight and Air Sunshine
  • American Airlines has canceled its flight to St. Thomas today.  They will arrive in St. Croix but may be delayed by at least an hour.
  • Delta, Spirit and JetBlue will arrive and depart as scheduled.
  • Travelers are advised to contact their airlines directly for flight information.
  • Although a curfew will be implemented at 12 noon, travelers may use their identification cards and their ticket or boarding pass as proof that they are traveling to the airport for their flight.  VIPA has communicated with the VI Police Department that the airports are open.  Each airline makes the determination whether or not they are operating. VIPA will continue to keep the public abreast of any changes.

Seaports

As of 7:30 a.m. today, all seaports in the USVI were closed by the U.S. Coast Guard, the Port Authority said. The Coast Guard will conduct an assessment after the storm passes and announce when they will reopen the seaports.  The Coast Guard is the only entity that is authorized to close and reopen seaports in the USVI.

Port Authority employees

All of VIPA’s administrative employees were dismissed at 9 a.m. today.  All other VIPA employees are essential and should take directives from their immediate supervisors concerning work schedules today.  VIPA employees should report to work according to their normal schedule tomorrow, August 29, 2019.  In addition, VIPA’s board meeting scheduled to be held on St. John today at 10 a.m. has been canceled and will be rescheduled.
