The Waste Management Authority is advising the community of an active fire at the Anguilla Landfill reported Tuesday at about 9:55 a.m. Virgin Islands Fire Service (VIFS) firefighters were on the scene at about 10:15 a.m., WMA said.
The fire is located on the east side of the landfill in the area where household and commercial waste is deposited, according to WMA. The authority said Firefighters and WMA personnel were working expeditiously to bring the fire under control. WMA advised the public and all haulers that landfill operations have been temporarily suspended. Haulers are asked to hold waste until normal operating hours resume.
Residents with respiratory disorders/conditions should take precautions to minimize their exposure to smoke as wind directions change, WMA said. The authority said it would continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health, the environment and haulers utilizing the Landfill.
