The Virgin Islands Department of Education’s Division of Virgin Islands Cultural Education (DVICE) will hold the first installment of its Cultural Pop-Up Workshop Series for the 2019-2020 school year on October 19 and the first Culture Crawl for St. Croix high school students on November 1.
The free costume-making, wire-bending, moko jumbie, and masquerading pop-up workshop will take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on October 19 at the David C. Canegata Ballpark.
DVICE Director Valrica Bryson described the workshops as “nine months of hands-on fun.”
Workshops are once a month from October 2019 to May 2020, and will be facilitated by local masters and culture bearers. They are sponsored in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and the Reichhold Center for the Arts.
The Culture Crawl: A Virgin Islands Cultural and Historical Scavenger Hunt will begin at 9:30 a.m. on November 1 at the National Park Service in Christiansted and is open to St. Croix high school students attending both public and private schools.
The grand prize winner will receive a day trip to the St. Thomas Carnival Food Fair 2020.
