The Virgin Islands Caribbean Cultural Center (VICCC) is hosting the 22 Annual Eastern Caribbean Island Cultures Conference to be held from Thursday, Oct. 31, to Saturday, Nov. 2, in the Great Hall, at the Albert A. Sheen Campus, on St. Croix. The community is invited to attend.

This year’s conference, focusing on: “languages, kinds of literatures and cultures of the Eastern and Greater Caribbean,” will feature Dr. George Franklin better known by stage name, Dr. Zay.

On Wednesday, Oct. 30, beginning at 12:30 p.m., participants will be treated to a Cultural Heritage Art Exhibition in the VICCC Suites on the Sheen Campus, UVI said. The exhibition will emphasize the theme, “Beautifully Stereotyped”. This production was put together by Opi’a Taino International, Inc., an organization of Taino Indians whose mission is to dismiss the myth that Amerindians of the Caribbean are extinct.

Other special highlights of the conference will include the 10th Annual Writing Project Conference on Friday, Nov. 1, at 9 a.m., in the Great Hall. This segment will be hosted by Dr.Valerie Combie, director of The Writing Project/The Writing Center.

The conference is free for the entire UVI community as well as Virgin Islands residents. However, participation requires a pre-registration. The 2019 conference is co-organized by the VICCC at the University of the Virgin Islands; the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras and the University of the West Indies, and Cave Hill Campus, Barbados.

The VICCC functions as a collaborative partner of the University’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, where it serves as a liaison designated to create a reservoir of resources and initiatives for the University and the community to maintain and sustain access to materials that nurture, preserve, research, document, restore, promote, protect and respect the Virgin Islands and Caribbean culture.
