Kenneth ‘Lord Blakey’ Blake, A Carnival Pioneer, Has Died

ST. THOMAS — A man synonymous with U.S. Virgin Islands culture, its carnival and calypso tent has died. Kenneth “Lord Blakey” Blake, a well-known figure in St. Thomas and throughout the Virgin Islands, died on Friday.

Mr. Blakey, who led the VI Carnival Committee for many years, was ubiquitous in St. Thomas circles and was known for his dedication to the success of carnival.

Dept. of Tourism Commissioner Joseph Boschulte and the department’s newly formed Division of Festivals, extended condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Blakey. D.O.T. described him as a “true Virgin Islands ambassador and carnival pioneer,” adding that “his unwavering love for and commitment to VI culture will never be forgotten. May he rest in eternal peace.”
