The Virgin Islands Certified Public Manger (VI-CPM) program, a group of government managers and supervisors, has received full accreditation status by the National Certified Public Manager (CPM) Consortium, according to a release issued by Government House.
The VI-CPM program, on August 26 and 27, graduated 42 managers and supervisors of the VI Government in both the St. Croix and St. Thomas/St. John Districts. Program participants were required to attend classes three days per month over a 12-month period.
The accreditation process began in December 2013 and after a lengthy review, the Consortium unanimously voted in favor of the VI-CPM program’s full accreditation at its annual meeting held in San Diego, Ca., Sept. 29-30.
Kenneth L. Hermon, Jr., director of the division of personnel, said the 42 graduates will now be better prepared to face the “unique challenges” associated with the public management profession, stating that he hopes, as a result, a more efficiently ran government in the Virgin Islands will take hold.
Hermon also thanked those involved in the effort, and urged all supervisors and managers to pursue enrolling in the second group of VI-CPM Program for 2014-2015 by the close of business on Wed., Oct. 15.
“The successful accreditation of the CPM program was only possible via a joint partnership with UVI, and I must publicly thank Dr. David Hall and Dr. Haldane Davies for their immeasurable contributions over the past several years,” he said.

The Certified Public Manager program is a nationally recognized management development certificate program specifically for managers in federal, state and local government, and non-profit organizations. The National Consortium promotes CPM programs by providing and monitoring accreditation standards, facilitating program development, encouraging innovation and developing linkages with programs and organizations with similar concerns. It accredits one agency per state or territory to direct the delivery of the training required for a public sector manager to be awarded the CPM credential.
