In an effort to bring awareness to the importance of mathematics and science instruction in the territory’s schools, the math and science departments of the St. Croix Educational Complex High School have teamed up to host the First Annual SCI-MA-THON on Saturday, Jan. 17, beginning at Plaza Extra East to the Educational Complex building.
Participants will assemble at 5:30 a.m. and the walk will begin at 6 a.m. Students participating in the event will receive six hours of community service and double the amount if they bring other students along.
A SCI-MA-THON logo competition won by Educational Complex student, Peter Clifford, was held for students to create a design for the newly formed group. As a result, SCI-MA-THON T-shirts featuring Clifford’s logo will be on sale for $10 during the walk. All proceeds will benefit the mathematics and science departments of the Educational Complex.
For his efforts, Clifford received a $50 prize.
Organizers say they welcome the participation of the entire St. Croix community on Saturday to help make the first SCI-MA-THON a success.
