Governor Kenneth Mapp Friday named Jamila A. Russell as Territorial ADA Coordinator.
In the role, Russel, who mounted an unsuccessful run for a seat in the 31st Legislature, will be responsible for coordinating programs and ensuring the territory’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973, according to a Government House press release.
Russell has served as a parent advocate for families with disabled children, and had been vocal while on the campaign trail of her own experience with raising a child with a disability.
According to the press release, Russell will begin meeting with non-profit groups and agencies next week in order to forge relationships to help build and promote the nondiscrimination requirements of the ADA.
Russell is the mother of two boys, a graduate of the Good Hope School on St. Croix and attended the University of the Virgin Islands.
