Quantum of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International’s newest ship and the first in its Quantum class, will make its maiden call at the West Indian Company Dock on St. Thomas, Tuesday, Jan. 27, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Quantum class ships are the cruise line’s second largest category of passenger ships based on gross tonnage, according to Royal Caribbean.
“It is always a pleasure to welcome a new ship to the Virgin Islands,” said Joseph B. Boschulte, president and CEO of the West Indian Company, Ltd. “As larger, more luxurious ships become the norm for the cruise industry, we look forward to being able to host more ships with the grandeur and appeal of Quantum of the Seas on a regular basis.”
Completed last October, Quantum of the Seas will call on ports in the Caribbean for its inaugural season before re-positioning in China in May.
Royal Caribbean’s website says the ship has been designed to “wow” passengers with “newly designed staterooms, game-changing technology, groundbreaking venues and the best dining ever.”
Some of Quantum’s features include: a skydiving simulator, a jewel-shaped capsule that lifts passengers 300 ft. above sea level, modular staterooms, roller skating, bumper cars and more.
The 1,139 foot ship’s maximum occupancy is 4,905, and it was named “Best New Ship in 2014” by the 7th Cruise Critic Editor’s Pick.
Anthem of the Seas, the second of three Quantum class ships planned, will be launched in the spring of 2015. The third ship, Ovation of the Seas, will be delivered in the fall of 2016.
