Delroy Richards, who was only recently tapped by Governor Kenneth Mapp as Police Commissioner-designee, found himself today dispelling rumors that he had resigned his position.
“I don’t normally respond to rumors, but it is imperative that I clarify this as soon as possible. I remain at the helm of the VIPD. I have not resigned. I continue to work every day with the men and women of this department on a number of issues currently facing us,” Richards said in a prepared statement from his office.
Richards was announced as police commissioner-designee on Dec. 30. While making the announcement, then-Governor-elect Mapp said he wanted to speak with Richards about leadership in the operational level of the Police Department.
In today’s statement, the acting commissioner also said he is involved in the VIPD at every level and that he is “pleased with the level of cooperation I am receiving from both inside and outside the VIPD.”
In closing, Richards, who is a former chief of the VIPD, said, “I am very happy to be back and have the opportunity to once again contribute to the community in this capacity.”
Before Richards or any of the other Mapp appointees officially begin serving as leaders of the departments for which they have been designated, they must be approved by the 31st Legislature, a process that is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
