Virgin Islands Delegate to Congress Stacey Plaskett has been named to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, a high-profile committee that has conducted investigations into the Internal Revenue Service, the housing and foreclosure crisis, and incidents of voter suppression and voter rights violations, among other important cases.
Plaskett’s new appointment comes less than two weeks after an announcement of her appointment to the House Committee on Agriculture.
Being a former Justice Department Attorney and Counsel to the House Ethics Committee, Plaskett said she appreciated the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee leaders’ decision to appoint her to the new committee, where she will use her experience to aid the body with its investigations.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve on such an important committee, the congresswoman said. “I believe that given my background as a former prosecutor and a Justice Department Attorney, I will be able to utilize that experience to best serve the Democratic Caucus and the Committee by providing insight and balance.”
The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform also has primary authority over the the U.S. Postal Service, and Plaskett has committed to ensuring the Virgin Islands is equally considered in any issues related to postal service, as the federal agency, Plaskett says, is considered important to many who live in the territory.
