Governor Mapp To Reveal Details Of Recent Cabinet Meeting Thursday

Featured / Government / News / Politics / Virgin Islands / February 10, 2015

On Thursday, Governor Kenneth Mapp will reveal details of a recently held cabinet meeting, as well as announce new members of his cabinet, according to information released from Government House on Monday.

The announcement comes amid a spike in violent crime in the territory; however, it is not known if Gov. Mapp will address the issue.

The press conference will be held at Government House in Christiansted at 10 a.m. It will also be broadcast live on radio and television.

VI Consortium will be in attendance.

The press conference falls on the same day the 31st Legislature will begin confirmation hearings of the first three of 14 nominees Mapp sent to Senate President Neville James, see here.

Second-term Sen. Kenneth Gittens, chair of the Committee on Rules and Judiciary, said last Friday that his office has issued background research packages, which include an authorization for release of information form that allows the Committee to receive a more complete and accurate disclosure of personal information about the appointees. The information includes police record checks and consumer reports, among other important information.

“My office has received approximately 14 nominations thus far and the staff and I have sent out a number correspondences along with instructions for filling out a questionnaire,” Gittens said. “I’ve received most of the authorization forms that allows us to conduct a more thorough and comprehensive background check as it pertains to consumer reports, financial disclosures, employment history, educational background, criminal history, and obligations, if any, to the Virgin Islands government.”

The three appointees scheduled for Thursday’s hearing are Department of Finance nominee, Valdamier Collens; Department of Tourism nominee, Beverly Nicholson-Doty; and Bureau of Motor Vehicles Director nominee, Lawrence Olive.

Gittens said he, along with his staff, “will review those packages to ensure that they are filled out correctly and will share the necessary documents with committee members and other members of the senate who participates in the process.”

Additional hearings are also scheduled for Feb. 19 and 20 on St. Thomas, and Feb. 25 and 26 on St. Croix.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
