Labor Commissioner-designee Catherine Hendry is reminding the territory’s employers to register with the Division of Unemployment Insurance and pay the required quarterly taxes in order to cover their employees in the event of unemployment.
According to local law, Title 24, Chapter 12, Section 302 (i), an employer is defined as “an employing unit which for some portion of a day within the preceding or current calendar year has or had in employment one or more individuals.” Hendry said that all wages paid, with very few exemptions, are subject to taxation (contribution) as per the law.
Hendry is also reminding employers to register their vacancies with the Labor department, citing VI Code, Title 27, Chapter 9, Section 303B, which states that employers are required to notify the “Employment Security Agency, Virgin Islands Dept. of Labor, of its intent to fill an existing position, now vacant or soon to become vacant, or a new previously unfilled position. Notice of vacancies shall include the title of the position, if any, the proposed salary, any required qualifications, and the general duties of the position, and the name, address or telephone number of the person to be contacted by applications for the position.”
Hendry stated, “The Virgin Islands Department of Labor is here, in part, to serve business enterprises and assist with their human resource needs. Especially now, during these tough economic times, we must all work together to maximize job opportunities and business sector growth.”
