Two men carrying illegal firearms Wednesday during a funeral at the Kingshill Cemetery on St. Croix were arrested by police and charged, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson has announced.
According to Jackson, during the standard surveillance of a funeral service for a murder victim by gunfire, police observed two men behaving in an unusual manner at the cemetery.
As the services ended, officers followed the men’s movements as they began to quicken their pace and split up, going in two different directions in an attempt to elude the officers.
One of the men, who was attempting to walk away quickly, was detained by officers who found a 10mm Glock with an obliterated serial number in his possession. As the second suspect began to run, he was seen tucking a shiny object into the shrubbery. Officers eventually caught up with the suspect, made a check of the area and discovered a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol that had been thrown into the shrubbery.
The men, both 24-years-old, were arrested and later identified as Devante Pryce and Paul Roberts II.
Both men were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and bail was set at $25,000 each.
Unable to post bail, the men were remanded to the Bureau of Corrections.
