ST. CROIX — A 3-year-old child was found at the Mon Bijou waste disposal site at about 4:28 a.m. on Saturday morning, Kevin Jackson, VIPD’s public information officer has announced.
Jackson said the 911 emergency call center received notification from a dump site worker, who said that the child was found wandering the disposal site’s grounds.
When officers arrived at the scene, the worker turned over the child, who was subsequently transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital for observation by the officers. Police also contacted the Department of Human Services for assistance with the case.
Later, the child’s mother, identified by police as Rashida Belle of Estate Mon Bijou, contacted the 911 emergency call center to report that her child was missing from her residence. She was told to contact the hospital immediately.
During an interview with a Human Services case worker, Belle said she’d fallen asleep at about 3:00 a.m. on Saturday with her child lying on the bed next to her. However, Belle said when she woke up to use the restroom, she realized that her child was not in the bedroom.
Human Services is continuing its investigation into the matter, along with detectives from the domestic violence unit.
