ST. CROIX — A detainee at the Golden Grove prison was stabbed multiple times in the back with a homemade knife by two perpetrators and was subsequently transferred to the Juan F. Luis Hospital for medical attention, Acting Director of the Bureau of Corrections, Dwayne A. Benjamin, Sr. confirmed late Thursday.
The alleged assailants, Jermaine Ducreay and Juan Illarraza, who are also detainees, remain in restricted segregation, according to the release.
Benjamin Sr. said the incident took place in Unit 9A of the facility’s detention center at approximately 1:51 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. Following a search of the unit and cells, a homemade shank was found in the shower drain of the unit.
The two assailants have been arrested and charged with the assault by the VIPD, and an active investigation is underway, according to the acting director.
The victim, N’Kosi Parris, is being held on a series of charges that include murder and aggravated rape. The assailants, Ducreay and Illarraza are being held on charges of destruction of property and first degree murder charges, respectively, in addition to the new charges.
