Inclement Weather May Result In Sewer Overflows, Waste Management Says

Breaking News / News / Virgin Islands / June 22, 2015

ST. THOMAS — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) is advising residents that due to the approaching tropical wave, the sewer collection system may experience a large inflow of rain and storm water. The heavy rainfalls may result in overflows in certain areas and cause manhole covers to pop up.

Strong showers and thunder storms are expected to impact the Virgin Islands through Tuesday afternoon.  Until the rains and the run-off subside, the sewer collection system will continue to be impacted.

Residents are asked to report any overflows to the VIWMA at (340) 715-9199 on St. Thomas; (340) 712-4999 on St. Croix and (340) 774-2141 on St. John.

Persons with impacted immune systems or respiratory conditions are asked to avoid areas with standing water. Motorists are also asked to proceed with caution in areas where there is localized flooding.

For more information, contact the Office of Communications Management at(340) 715-9110 or (340) 690-4218.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
