ST. CROIX — The racino located at the Randall “Doc” James Racetrack was robbed at gunpoint on Sunday night, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson announced via press release on Monday.
According to Jackson, the 911 emergency call center received notification of a robbery that occurred at about 11:40 p.m. According to preliminary reports, the suspects came to the racetrack in a stolen vehicle, drove up to the entrance and went inside the building with guns, demanding money from patrons and the racino’s staff.
The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and exchanged fire with security personnel as they drove off. The stolen vehicle was discovered within minutes of the crime, abandoned in the vicinity of Home Depot.
Members of the K9 and special operations unit were summoned to the scene and conducted a search for the suspects with negative results. Detectives are continuing their investigation into the occurrence.
